Have you noticed how much hungrier you get right before your periods? I am starving the week before! and I mean, really hungry! much more than usual.
When I was deep into bingeing and dieting, I ignored the natural fact that for a few days a month, I had to eat more. So if I was on a diet, I thought I could not control myself and I hated myself for being so weak. So I binged or I thought I was simply because I did not know what was going on. Nobody ever told me this simple fact: a woman may need up to 500 more calories a day before her periods, it may be only one days of extreme hunger or it can last for a whole week. It is a genuine hunger. It is not a myth. The body needs more calories because it burns more during this period. It has to do with hormones obviously (I don't exactly know why and how; if anybody reading this has the answer, please send me an e-mail).
I know now exactly what is going on on those days and I do honor my hunger. I nourish myself the best I can. I was going through this period these past few days and I had a lot of seaweeds. I just couldn't stop eating seaweeds. Seaweeds are extremely rich in minerals so I guess my body was lacking some or a lot of them. Here is a very simple recipe for a "tartare d'algues" or a seaweed tartare:
I usually make a lot of it and keep it in the fridge in a glass bowl for over a week. Soak a bag of kombu, one of arame, one of wakame, one of spiral seaweed for 30 mn in cold water. Rinse well and drain well. Pour all in the food processor (you may want to do this in two batches because this is a lot) with a bit of vinegar, himalayan salt, ginger, garlic, a little bit of onion. Process for 1 minute. Do not overprocess it or it will be too mushy. Taste and adjust by adding more of the ingredients when needed. I usually add dulse flakes at the end and process again for a few seconds till everything is well mixed but pieces of seaweed are still in the mixture. This is delicious either on a salad or on crackers.
